About GOTHAM GRADES

GOTHAM GRADES is an independent, one-person project built to make New York City's public restaurant inspection data actually usable — not just published.

Why this exists

New York City already collects and publishes this data — every health inspection, every grade, every violation, for tens of thousands of food businesses. It's genuinely excellent open data. But it lives in a government open-data portal built for analysts and developers, not for someone standing outside a restaurant trying to decide whether to go in.

I build web apps because I believe useful public data shouldn't take more than a click to reach. GOTHAM GRADES takes that same city data and puts it on a map you can actually browse, a search you can actually use, and a profile page for every business with its real inspection history — in plain language, without needing to know what a SODA API or a SoQL query is.

What GOTHAM GRADES is — and isn't

This is an independent developer project. It is not operated by, affiliated with, or endorsed by the City of New York, the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, or any city agency. All of the underlying inspection data comes from NYC Open Data and belongs to the city — what this site adds is the map, the search, the business profiles, and the effort to make all of that easy to actually use.

Because of that, GOTHAM GRADES is only ever as accurate and up to date as the city's own published records. See our Guide for more on how the grading system works and what the data can and can't tell you.
